With so many gifts to buy, and so much else to do during the holidays, what kind of research do you do when making purchases for everyone on your list?

I just buy as I go--go into a store, look around, "oh maybe X would lke that" and buy it....I tend to be lopsided too and have to redistribute to make it a little more even. I do make a list with ideas....but often they are "if only I could afford that" ideas
